Cavanaugh's, located in the Monadnock Building, the first "skyscraper" built in Chicago (and also John Root's final project), is hidden from the bustle of Jackson. The warm, earthy dining room reminded me of a nice midwestern lodge. Service was prompt and thorough. I ordered the vegetable barley soup as an appetizer and fried calamari as my main course. The soup was soothing and served at the perfect temperature (not scalding, not tepid) but lacked flavor. My squid was relatively cold and chewy, and the accompanying sauce was straight out of a Martha Stewart cookbook: it looked pretty but tasted bland. Still, I'll give the place another try based on the comfortable dining space, decent service, and my companions hearty endorsement of his buffalo chicken sandwich.
