With posters and pix from The Godfather and GoodFellas, Caponie's is pure postwar Italo-American cheese. Nonetheless, the pizza is about as good as youll find in any Little Italy joint. The secret is a wood-burning oven as big as a walk-in closet, blazing with oak. I like the quattro stagione, which allows you to pick four toppings from a roster that includes Gorgonzola and bocconcini, little balls of fresh mozzarella; you can also get traditional preparations such as a Neapolitan-style pizza margherita. Other Italian standards on the menu-homemade minestrone, a fish stew packed with seafood, rich chicken Florentine-are impressive. There are even a few dishes you dont see every day: arancini, orange balls of rice stuffed with peas, beef, and cheese, and panzerotti, deep-fried tarts filled with meat, cheese, and crushed tomatoes.
