This 2004 comedy drama follows characters connected to a Cape Town animal shelter run by a woman who's sworn off marriage while pursing a furtive affair with a married man. Director Mark Bamford has a feel for the entanglements of daily life, and his lively editing rhythm holds the multiple stories together. In what has to be one of cinema's best marriage proposals, a refugee from Congo with a PhD in astronomy asks a woman to marry him by telling her to tear up unopened a letter from Canada that might say he'd be welcome as an immigrant. The enduring racism in South Africa is noted, but this is mostly a tearjerker. In English and subtitled Afrikaans and Xhosa. 107 min.
