Caleb James, Save Money Army

When: Fri., July 19, 6 p.m. 2013
Price: $10, $5 in advance
It’s been a great year for local hip-hop collective Save Money: Chance the Rapper’s Acid Rap has become an international sensation, former Kids These Days front man Vic Mensa has made waves with preview cuts off his forthcoming mixtape Innanettape, and MCs Brian Fresco and Dally Auston are getting plenty of love locally with Mafioso and The Wood, their own new mixtapes. Now Save Money rapper-producer Caleb James is releasing a mixtape called The Jones, and it promises to maintain the collective’s hot streak. James’s raps create a magnetic friction between his zoned-out flow and his tightly wound rhymes, which he spits in blunt blocks or rapid-fire snippets; this style works particularly well on the chunk of The Jones I’ve been able to listen to. At press time James was still tinkering with part of the mixtape, but the tunes I’ve heard demonstrate his versatility—on the trap-gone-chiptune single “I’m Gone” he raps about being a big-time MC with the ease of a far more experienced and successful one, and on the much more laid-back “24’s” he lets in some air between his syllables as he sings the song’s sweet chorus over a funky, slinky R&B groove—but no matter how loose he gets, he maintains the same aggressive focus he has on the more abrasive tracks. If the rest of The Jones sounds this good, I’m sure I’ll be hooked on it the rest of the summer. —Leor Galil The Save Money Army opens.
