Gay-friendly south-side cafe welcoming to people of all stripes.

Our Review

Boystown has plenty of attractions, but the commute between that neighborhood and my Chatham apartment can get a little old. So I was happy to learn of Cafe Nine 17, a rare gay-friendly venue on the south side. The interior has green booths and tablecloths, plants, and a portrait of a black family in prayer. Music consists of piped-in old school standards and a live R&B band. Locals perform stand-up comedy and spoken word. Much of the food is standard American fare, including dinners that feature pork, chicken, or shrimp, and steak wraps. The staff loads cheesecake slices with strawberries. Other standout specialties include sweet potato fries with chipotle-ranch sauce and a cheeseburger soup with diced tomatoes and pickles.
