Southern-themed Lettuce restaurant featuring barbecue and two bars with cocktails and a selection of whiskeys masterminded by Paul McGee, formerly of the Whistler.

Our Review

At Bub City, a southern-themed addition to the Lettuce Entertain You brood, nuance takes a backseat to the cheesiest kinds of pleasure. Diners eat off of ironic plastic imitations of classic paper plates. In the women's bathroom there's a mannequin pissing in a fake urinal. There's an appetizer called "giddy up fries" (better than they sound). In fact, the whole menu—overseen by Doug Psaltis, formerly of LEYE’s RPM Italian—is for the most part thoughtful, fun, and solid. The barbecue includes mad-tender brisket and a couple intriguing outliers like house-made pastrami and lamb ribs with harissa yogurt. Pulled pork, Carolina style, is just fine, as are the Saint Louis-style ribs, pink on the inside and available in half or whole racks. I'd recommend the shrimp boil, which factors roasted corn and potatoes into a rich, slightly vegetal-tasting broth, and the chicken, fried to a good crisp and served with Alabama-style white barbecue sauce. Speaking of sauce, whiskey-based drinks make up the majority of former Whistler barkeep Paul McGee’s cocktails; there’s also a long, excellent list of bourbons and other choices for drinking straight. And while, as befits a splashy River North destination, Bub City is insanely busy, there are two bars you can wait at, the one on the north framed by an American flag made of beer cans: Bud for red, Old Style for white, and Bud Light for blue.
