Earlier this month Weekend Nachos front man John Hoffman wrote a blog post for Revolver listing the “Top Five Signs That You Are a Poser in Extreme Music,” and at number two was “No Sense of Humor.” Not a shock, given that his band’s name could be a punch line to a joke somebody thought up after smoking ridiculously potent pot and binge-watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 on Netflix. Thankfully this Chicago outfit has a similarly fuck-all attitude about the orthodoxy rampant in extreme music—Weekend Nachos’ recent Still (Relapse) demonstrates the band’s indiscriminate love for hardcore, powerviolence, grindcore, and any other hard, heavy, angry-sounding style. On “Ignore” they decelerate from jittery, stomping hardcore into molasses-paced doom; they light up the blindingly aggro “S.C.A.B.” with a blazing, almost cartoonishly over-the-top guitar riff; and right in the middle of the title track, they stick in a clanging piano. In his lyrics Hoffman tears into scene bullshit, condemning sexism (“Wolves”) and blasting musicians who care about their cred and clothing (“You’re Not Punk”). His coarse, hateful screams sure make it sound like he’s given himself wholeheartedly to anger, so it’s a relief that he can joke around too. —Leor Galil Broken Hope headlines; Weekend Nachos, Krieg, Harm’s Way, and Wilt open.
