Most romantic comedies for black audiences either pander to men (with big-booty slapstick) or to women (with mm-hmm-girlfriend-all-men-are-dogs gags). This nimble farce written and directed by Daniel Taplitz aims higher, relying on a Shakespearean weave of mismatched lovers and mistaken identities. The author of a best seller on how to ditch your lover (Jamie Foxx) gives advice to his nerdy boss (Peter MacNicol), who's being hounded by a marriage-minded gold digger (Jennifer Esposito), and to his player cousin (Morris Chestnut), who fears he's about to be dumped by his woman (Gabrielle Union, a delight as usual). This isn't all gold—there are lame riffs on a booze-swilling dog and a flabby old man with a boner—but it's well above average. PG-13, 82 min.
