A headstrong princess in medieval Scotland, upset at having to marry against her will, puts an evil spell on her mother. The story for this revisionist fairy tale, which promotes contemporary attitudes about parenting and gender equality, is less inspired than usual for Pixar, but the movie upholds the studio's high standard of computer animation. The tapestries, stones, and wood planks are vividly textured, and the major characters, emotionally resonant in the early Disney tradition, display an impressive range of facial expression. Indeed, the film's intimate qualities tend to be more interesting than its epic flourishes: the storytelling hits its stride only in the second half, when the action takes place over just a few days and the mother-daughter relationship is allowed to overshadow the suspense set pieces. Mark Andrews, Brenda Chapman, and Steve Purcell directed; the vocal talent includes Billy Connolly and Emma Thompson.
