Highly reminiscent of Richard Linklater's Slacker, this low-budget debut feature by Todd Sklar isn't much more than 91 minutes of banter from a quartet of college pals. But the dialogue has actual wit in addition to the usual ironic gloss, and Sklar's vision of college is the fond fiction we all like to remember in adulthood: endless days of sleeping late, drinking beer, cracking wise, and flirting with the opposite sex. Near the end Sklar dutifully inserts a beautifully written Paper Chase scene in which the hero gets a wake-up call from his hip, sardonic professor. But who in his right mind would want to wake up from this?

Sorry there are no showtimes for Box Elder on Saturday, November 21.
