A home invasion goes awry in this stingingly provocative 1972 movie about a Beverly Hills TV personality (Andrew Duggan), his wife (Joyce Van Patten), and their encounter with a philosophical would-be thief and rapist (Yaphet Kotto). Threatened by the stranger, the heavily leveraged couple—who say their son is in Vietnam, as if this makes up for their failings—take the opportunity to confront angst they hadn't realized they had. All the characters, including a compulsively flirtatious young woman the husband meets when the thief sends him to the bank to withdraw his savings, are boldly allegorical, but they're also deeply layered. And the bizarre, psychoanalytically elegant plot engineered by writer-director Larry Cohen (It's Alive!) refuses to take refuge in platitudes. With Yaphet Kotto, Joyce Van Patten, Andrew Duggan, and Jeannie Berlin.
