Rated R · 2009
A slick, relatively entertaining live-action remake of the 2000 anime favorite. Like the recent Swedish vampire export Let the Right One In, this benefits from its cultural specificity: it centers on an American army base in Tokyo during the Vietnam war, where the teenage daughter of a general (with all the political baggage that implies) befriends a Japanese classmate and discovers she's half-human, half-vampire, charged by her government with finding and destroying demons. Eventually the action moves outside the base and into more generic fantasy territory, with numerous martial-arts set pieces and violent rippings that send blood globules sailing through the air like explosions of red beans. The director is Chris Nahon, a Frenchman known for his commercials and music videos, as well as the Jet Li/Bridget Fonda actioner Kiss of the Dragon (2001). R, 84 min.
