Before landing in federal prison, Illinois governor and walking pompadour Rod Blagojevich had dreams of climbing the political ladder to glory in Washington, D.C. Michael Feinstein's comedy locates the megalomaniac midscandal, downing Ambiens in his bedroom and facing the realization that his rise may be less meteoric than he'd hoped. Director Clayton Fox and lead actor Darren Stephens paint Blago as less a colluding villain than a lovable fool who seeks advice from Elvis Presley and Richard Nixon. That's a workable premise for a satirical romp, but, bouncing back and forth between factual narrative and fictionalized high jinks, Feinstein wedges his play in a genre gap. It ends up feeling overlong at 90 minutes. —Dan Jakes
