Two black literature professors—one from a cushy liberal arts college, the other from a state university—meet for dinner at an upscale "experience" restaurant. On the menu: wild seeds, salads without utensils ("Applebee's has forks," says delightfully strange server Kate McCandless), and each others' credentials. Idris Goodwin's tight, provocative new play transcends the talkiness and didacticism that often impairs social-issue theater and opts instead for heated, engaging arguments between two fleshed-out characters, played with poise, nuance, and teeth by LaNisa Frederick and Demetria Thomas. Directors Marie Cisco and Shepsu Aakhu withhold easy answers in this production for MPAACT. Relevance and fresh ideas, on the other hand, are served up in large, savory portions. —Dan Jakes
