Chris Bell's robust video essay about the steroids controversy raises the bar for sports documentaries. An avid bodybuilder who's tried anabolic steroids (and whose two athlete brothers rely on them), Bell presides over this insightful, often droll survey like a sweeter, buffer version of Michael Moore, trolling gyms, universities, and Congress to grill assorted experts. Some gonzo stunts—like a Bowfinger riff where he hires illegal immigrants to home cook “patented” sports supplements—are antic fun. But serious interviews, such as those with Donald Hooton, a Texan father who blames steroids for his son's death, and disgraced Olympic gold medal sprinter Ben Johnson, consider the steeper costs of America's gladiator culture.
