Part of the success of The Best Church of God can be attributed to its stellar source material: the Bible, a boon to comedy if ever there was one. This satire of Christianity and its incongruous traditions hits all the harder because people take the Good Book so seriously.
But what makes the show divine is the details. Mike Descoteaux and his team have put together an expertly written, honest-to-God church service, complete with sermons, communion, and even a children’s program. Whether it’s obscure bits even disciples haven’t heard of, or embarrassments believers would rather ignore, The Best Church Of God scours the verses to find it all. A new run starts August 28 and closes September 11: Saturdays, 8 PM, Victory Gardens’ Richard Christiansen Theater, 2433 N. Lincoln, 773-871-3000, $15.
