Best Jazz Reissue Label

International Phonograph

Hyde Park resident Jonathan Horwich has only released three titles via International Phonograph since reviving the long-dormant label last year, but in each case he heroically returned a crucial piece of jazz history to circulation. In 2011 he reissued avant-garde classics by trumpeter Bill Dixon and saxophonist Julius Hemphill, and in April of this year he reissued Extension, a 1963 Pacific Jazz LP by Los Angeles composer, arranger, and pianist Clare Fischer, who died in January at 83, while the release was being prepared. The album's a stunner, setting Fischer's beautifully melancholy melodies in kaleidoscopic arrangements that dazzle with orchestral color, dramatic counterpoint, and extreme dynamics. Here's hoping Horwich continues to rescue criminally overlooked jazz outliers from oblivion.
