Best Economics Lesson Not Written by Brecht

Enron at Timeline Theatre

Regular people weren't supposed to understand what happened at Enron. The complicated financial maneuvers that brought the Texas-based energy company down were beyond abstract—they were impossible, carried out by a bunch of sly pataphysicians who were doing their damnedest to cover their tracks. Brit playwright Lucy Prebble did the impossible in her turn, anatomizing the con in a fast-moving black comedy complete with shell companies depicted as raptors in suits. Rachel Rockwell's Timeline production last winter played the whole thing out with grand, smart panache. As a commenter on the Reader's website wrote, "Who knew financial crime could be so much fun!"
