Best Chicago Theater That Doesn't Yet Have a Regional Tony

Writers' Theatre

664 Vernon, Glencoe
847-242-6000

writerstheatre.org

It's not in the Chicago Tony club yet, but the little theater started by Michael Halberstam and Marilyn Campbell nearly 20 years ago in the back room of a Glencoe bookstore has been identified as the "best drama company" in the nation by the Wall Street Journal. Now housed in two venues within two blocks of each other, it consistently delivers excellence up close: exquisitely produced classics and new works, performed by Chicago's best actors in either a custom-built 108-seat theater in the Woman's Library Club, or the original tiny room behind the curtain in Books on Vernon. An easy commute by Metra; the season coming up includes Pinter, Stoppard, and Sondheim. —Deanna Isaacs
