In his first feature-length promotion the notorious purple dinosaur wins the heart of a boy whose sister and her best friend are already acolytes in his church of niceness. After metamorphosing from a stuffed animal in a scene that contains the only suspense this frustrating 1998 antidrama has to offer, Barney leads several children and adults in the sort of sing-alongs and structured yet structureless games that are his MO on television. In nearly every scene the members of a familylike group that's characterized by its minimal, pointed diversity urge one another to have fun, then ostensibly have it—simply by singing about how much fun they're having. With very little modification, this archly innocuous children's musical could have been marketed as a sequel to Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Steve Gomer directed a screenplay by Stephen White. 75 min.
