After working for years in New York City, a man returns to his hometown in the mountains of southern Mexico and uneasily resumes his position in a family that no longer knows him. This 2012 feature by writer-director Antonio Méndez Esparza favors static long takes, its plot developments unfolding at a snail's pace, and the nonprofessional players come off as inexpressive more than anything else. But when the protagonist falls into a financial crisis, the movie develops a narrative urgency and a more forthright sympathy for its working-class characters; by the end it achieves a poignant, impassioned tone reminiscent of classic neorealism. In Spanish with subtitles.
