Tom Hanks and director Ron Howard reunite for this sequel to the The Da Vinci Code, delivering a movie that's more streamlined and action-packed than the original. A mystery-solving Harvard professor (Hanks) is enlisted by the Vatican to help defeat the Illuminati, a centuries-old secret society believed to have stolen some explosive antimatter from a remote laboratory and kidnapped four cardinals who are candidates for the papacy. The movie includes some tony philosophizing about the conflict between science and faith, but it's mostly a beat-the-clock chase through Rome (nicely evoked in Salvatore Totino's lush cinematography) as Hanks mines the Vatican archives and art history to crack the Illuminati's code and foil an assassin. Ewan McGregor, Stellan Skarsgard, and Armin Mueller-Stahl edge this adaptation of Dan Brown's novel a couple notches above pulp. PG-13, 135 min.
