Nick Broomfield's gripping sequel to his 1992 Aileen Wuornos: The Selling of a Serial Killer picks up the story just a few weeks before Wuornos's execution in Florida for the murder of seven men. Summoned to testify at her final appeal (where footage from the first documentary is screened by both sides), Broomfield jumps back into the fray, filming two harrowing interviews with Wuornos and equally haunting conversations with relatives and childhood acquaintances. Although Broomfield's grandstanding has provoked charges of hypocrisy, this is a genuinely moral work that raises unsettling questions about the haphazard application of the death penalty, and it's certainly more complex and affecting than the fictionalized portrait of Wuornos in Monster. 89 min.
