Adapted and originally directed for Steppenwolf Theatre Company by Frank Galati, After the Quake comprises two tales from Haruki Murakami's collection of the same name, inspired by the catastrophic 1995 earthquake in Kobe, Japan. This State Theatre revival has a decided work-in-progress feel, but its spare style allows the quiet, aching irony of Murakami's prose to come through with fresh insight. In "Honey Pie," a writer tells winsome stories to soothe the quake-spooked daughter of a college friend for whom he's nursed a decades-long passion; "Super-Frog Saves Tokyo" concerns an unassuming loan officer who joins forces with the title amphibian to battle a giant worm. Despite occasional awkwardness, the cast of non-Asian actors display charm and heart. —Kerry Reid
