Aesop Rock with Rob Sonic & DJ Big Wiz, Edison, Dark Time Sunshine

When: Sat., July 28, 9 p.m. 2012
Price: $21, $19 in advance

Ian Bavitz helped define the underground hip-hop aesthetic of the early aughts as Aesop Rock: his steady stream of releases combined claustrophobic, pulsing beats with syllable-packed lines delivered in his irrepressible, elastic drawl. The most recent Aesop Rock release, None Shall Pass, came out in 2007, and as underground hip-hop has evolved in the years since, Bavitz has too. He's formed the group Hail Mary Mallon with two of his regular collaborators, Rob Sonic and DJ Big Wiz (they've got one full-length so far, 2011's Are You Gonna Eat That?), and he's toured extensively with antifolk singer Kimya Dawson, who's become his partner in a new duo called Uncluded. Sonic, Wiz, and Dawson all appear on the brand-new Aesop Rock album Skelethon (Rhymesayers), whose sparse sound might come as a bit of a shock if you haven't heard anything from him since None Shall Pass—but Bavitz's surreal lyrics and rollicking, seesawing swagger remain intact. Sonic and Wiz will join him for tonight's show. —Leor Galil Edison and Dark Time Sunshine open.
