If you're old-fashioned like me, you may prefer your female exhibitionism undiluted by feminist-empowerment rhetoric, Oprah-style therapeutics, or hipster irony. But if these sound like the ingredients for a fizzing pink martini, you'll probably enjoy this 2008 documentary about Seattle's neo-burlesque scene. Director Deidre Allen Timmons profiles ten women of diverse ages as they take the class “Burlesque 101” from leading scenester Miss Indigo Blue. One student wants to show the world “that women can be sexual creatures too,” and the others are working through issues of comparable novelty. First prize for political purity goes to Shanghai Pearl, locally notorious for her shocking—shocking!—reclamation of ethnic stereotypes from World War II. 91 min.
