A captivating blend of East and West, this lavish 1929 silent feature was the third collaboration between Indian movie mogul Himansu Rai and German director Franz Osten. Adapted from the ancient Sanskrit epic the Mahabharata, it tells the story of two kings whose shared weakness for gambling takes a sinister turn after they both fall in love with the same virtuous peasant girl. The filigreed Indian architecture, filmed on location in Rajasthan, combines with the sophisticated pictorial storytelling, which Osten mastered at the German studio UFA, to create a sumptuous visual experience. 77 min.
