A peppy advertising executive (Kate Hudson) learns she has inoperable cancer, falls in love with her hunky doctor (Gael Garcia Bernal), argues with her friends and family, and converses with the Almighty (Whoopi Goldberg). Director Nicole Kassell (
The Woodsman) lobs softball-sized jokes that tend to land somewhere between cheesy and outright stupid, and the pathos seems unearned, particularly when Kassell reaches for a poignant denouement. Many a film has considered mortality, but few that I’ve seen have been so flippant about it. With Kathy Bates and Peter Dinklage in a cameo as a male prostitute.
