Indian journalist and filmmaker Parvez Sharma pleads on behalf of homosexuals persecuted by their fundamentalist Islamic communities, and his sobering 2007 video documentary is all the more poignant because his subjects remain faithful Muslims. (Fearing reprisals, many of them are masked.) One gay South African is even an imam, and his mission to promote an alternative interpretation of the Koran passage used to condemn homosexuality provides the movie's through line. Covering more than half a dozen countries, Sharma stretches himself too thin, and as a result the documentary seems sketchy; he would have done well to present on-screen some of the background information in his production notes. Subtitled.
