The Paranormal Activity movies are so dull and shoddily made that any decent comedian could mock them in his sleep. For the most part, cowriter-coproducer-star Marlon Wayans avoids the obvious bait in this Scary Movie-style gagfest; instead spoofing horror films provides a pretext for jokes about sex, monogamy, race relations, and surveillance culture—many of them quite funny. The house in question belongs to a longtime couple (Wayans, Essence Atkins) who have just moved in together, and some of the sharpest bits deal with anxieties about cohabitation. In a pleasant surprise, the jokes target machismo as well as stereotypical female behavior; if it weren’t for the hateful gay stereotype played by Nick Swardson, this might be considered progressive. Michael Tiddes directed; with David Koechner and Cedric the Entertainer.
