      <![CDATA[MM,

Under Michaels' proposed formulation, wouldn't my newspaper with zero ad pages and zero pages of content be optimal and highly profitable?

Or must we recognize that there is nothing at all magical about the 50/50 ratio of ads to content?

<![CDATA[I suppose the ST is happy to see the Trib is willing to run, not walk, off a cliff, but they're likely the only ones happy about Michaels' idiocy.

Frankly, he's aiming straight at being the Penny Saver, which I suppose might be profitable at some level, but it's not what you expect from the self proclaimed World's Greatest Newspaper.

<![CDATA[Maybe that's what Michaels meant. 300 column inches a year is pretty low for a reporter (at 12 inches a story, which isn't far off at the Courant, that would be just 25 stories a year). But add in all the editors and so forth who don't write, and it might work out. But we're not doing Michaels a favor by assuming he confused pages and column inches.

<![CDATA[If the Tribune wants to save money it should consider reducing in size from its current broadsheet to a smaller, more manageable format. Such as the (London) Times' 'compact' size or the (London) Guardian's 'Berliner.'

Going forward, is it too difficult to imagine a situation in two or three years when the Tribune is a 32-page freebie Mon - Fri with bulky Sat and Sun editions being paid for?
