<![CDATA[Thanks for showing another side to the story. It makes a lot more sense... except that Latin needs a new spokesperson and PR manager, and needs to realize that being honest would have been the best policy.

<![CDATA[It not surprising that the Chicago Park District has NOT been able to respond to the ever increasing demand for soccer fields. NOT just along the lakefront but across the city. Back in 1990, I recognized that the future grow of soccer would require over 100 new soccer fields across the city, but the mayor wouldn't listen to me. I spoke in front of the park district board, but the board was made up of too many fat softball players and others who hated soccer. The city still needs it's 100 new fields. NOW the city is trying to make up for what they should have been doing twenty years ago. But the problem atill exists that the city doesn't give soccer the respect it deserves, just like the school board used to disrepect it. The worse fields were in the Mexican community, because in those days Hispanics had NO clout. Daley has done all he could to get the Hispanic community on his side, but he still hasn't produced the soccer fields that they need. Its nice to see that the Lincoln Park parents who wouldn't open their mouth 15 years ago are now finally on board. But it still seens like it will be a long time before soccer has a friend in City Hall.

<![CDATA[Wish that I could see it this way, Mike, but I can't. If this were all about benevolence, then why didn't Tim Mitchell and the Latin School call a press conference long ago to talk about how they were jointly initiating a program to repair and rebuild soccer fields throughout the city, support AYSO, and build up infrastructure in underserved parks? Public hearings then would have been a cakewalk-lovefest.

They didn't do this because I am sure none of it ever crossed their minds. Ben J. and the Lincoln Park folks have it right on this.

<![CDATA[There's more that's connected to this. Organizations that use the parks for athletics is a part of the topic, but there's also the central planning v. local control aspect, which is being played out in Grant Park with the the Childrens' Museum, and in Rogers Park, FOTP is being used as a cat's paw to promote a major landfill construction project. I didn't know about these other athletic fields, but it fits the pattern. I wrote a post about it:

      <![CDATA[Connect the dots...

The city of Chicago collected $500.4 million from Tax Increment Finance districts in 2006. Where did that money go. Reporting in The Reader over the years demonstrates it's a slush fund used to fund special interests, pet projects and even private business - such as $8.5 to Grossingers Auto to move from Wells Street to the corner of North and Hasted - the fasted growing retail area in the city. There's even a TIF disstrict - which is supposed to be used to fund growth in "blighted areas" for the Central Loop - which throws off $100 million a year. This TIF money is off the books of the city budget and is NOT available to be captured by the schools, libraries and park district - which all rely on taxes to operate. So it's no wonder that the Park District pleads poverty and enters into terrible deals. The mayor is salting away billions for his Olympic bid - starving the rest of the city's operating units of capital to operate, repair and expand. Sunset the TIF districts and let that property tax money flow into the proper and viewable city channels. Stop subsidizing private interests - just view Ben Joravsky's work on this web site to get the picture. Stop masking b.s. sweetheart deals as "public-private" partnerships. Stop the Latin School Lincoln Park land grab - which is one of the worst.
