      <![CDATA[This is an excellent idea.  It would also be cool to elaborate on the design and extend the current L map into an ideal L.  
    
    For example - extend the red line further south, etc.  
    
    Larry mentioned the fact that whatever gets fixed on the L will probably be tailored to Olympic-goers, and parts of the L that need to be fixed won't be.  I agree, and I think that sucks.

      <![CDATA[Hah -- some additional federal dollars might match whatever local taxpayers will pay out to shore up the L for the Games, but the L will be 'fixed' only to the degree necessary to get people to and from the Games.  
    
    Other important projects -- particularly those to build out transit in underserved, poor neighborhoods -- still won't get done.  If you aren't in the path of people's way from the hotels to the games, you won't see much benefit (and even if you are, you might just lose your house or business).  Hence, Mayor Daley pokes his head out and declares that we need a 'cross-town' L line for the games, but we won't get Red Line extension south, necessary rehab of existing lines, and so on.
