The rule of thumb should be: When pro athletes start using a term, it's over-used.

I heard a ex-pro lineman use "It is what it is" the other day. So, that's it for that term!
    :D

I'm just sayin'" is, I believe, a close cousin of "It is what it is" and I find it infinitely more intriguing. I use it frequently to explain something that is an accepted truth but not necessarily my opinion on the subject.

Vivid, and vividly, those are nice words... So much better than livid, yet only off by one letter.

Thank you for transforming the half-baked into the enjoyable, J.R.

Now off to work I go, to do my part. It is what it is, and that's the way I like it.

"It is what it is." I vividly remember Patrick Arden, then the Reader's valiant managing editor, saying that whenever he dropped a half-baked manuscript on my desk. Then he'd clap me on the shoulder, laughing at my woe, and say, "Come on, Jim--make it sing!"

That says it all, really: it is what it is, so make it sing.

Perhaps it is just me, but I am tired of the word "prenaturally-" I feel like I've seen it everywhere this year.

And, as for "it is what it is," I think it's just a very realist phrase. The glass is neither half empty, nor half full. It's just there. Kind of like the apathy plaguing us as oil hits $100 per barrel. I remember in 2004 we balked at $40. What needs to be transformational is viable sources of renewable energy. And fast. But then again our dependence on foreign oil is what it is. ;)

"It is what it is" may be mis-used and over-used, but it is, in fact useful, in pointing out that a society suffering from ever-increasing paranoia needs to step back at times, and accept that -- as Freud has been paraphrased to say -- sometimes a banana is just a banana.

However, the phrase "is is just me?" should in fact be banished. More often than not, it is just you, and you're using the expression as cover. If you're a writer and you want to make a statement, make the statement, and if it's just you, well then, I suppose it is what it is.
