<![CDATA[Another great Goldwyn line, when he wanted to bring a French women-in-prison play to the screen: Someone said to him, "You can't film that play! It's about lesbians!" He responded, "So what? We'll make 'em Americans!"

<![CDATA[Goldwyn was the Harvey Weinstein of his day, giving middle-brow audiences entertainments they deemed worthy of their attention, ie., overproduced adaptations of literary works, preferably British and with British stars. Wyler was doing good work before Goldwyn, as in "Counselor at Law," "The Good Fairy" and "The Gay Deception" (the latter a recent TCM premiere, and quite a good film), but not a whole lot after him. Hawks, Vidor, and Ford made some of their worst films for Goldwyn, but it you really want to see how bad he was, check out his Danny Kaye period. Unwatchable!

<![CDATA[Apparently Goldwyn's lifelong battle with the English language provided Berg with an endless source of punch-lines. My personal favorite: when Goldwyn ordered his story editor to buy the rights to The Little Foxes, and was cautioned that the play was "very caustic," he insisted, "I don't give a damn how much it costs!"

Personally, I think he was crazy to change his name from Goldfish to Goldwyn. "Gold Fish Studios presnts..." And the logo could've been a roaring goldfish...
