@ I Think Card is Right on This One-
Marriage as a union of one man and one woman is incredibly recent in human history. As any Mormon can tell you, for most of human history, polygamy has been the norm.

the difference between the so-called "free speech" people on the right and left, is that "free speech" people on the left feel what they believe in, whereas "free speech" people on the right don't feel the ramifications of their words, because if they did, they wouldn't be on an organization actively trying to prevent marriage from being redefined to include same-sex couples.

See, conservatives love to frame the marriage issue as a peaceful co-existing institution alongside civil unions, but they can't frame or envision themselves as part of the same institution that includes the rest of the human race.

The first time I ever heard of Orson Scott Card was by way of a short story, "A Thousand Deaths," which was published in the now-defunct Omni magazine. More recently I read and enjoyed the first four of his "Ender Wiggin" novels, and I slogged through all five books in his "Homecoming" sci-fi saga (though becoming somewhat puzzled by the Mormon imagery in the last book).

It was only LATER that I found out what a strident homophobe Orson Scott Card was.

Here's the ancient tradition I want to throw out or, at the least, weaken as time goes on (and oddly never mention by right-wing dolts): The tendency of the paranoid, fearful, insecure majority to go like a hungry wolf against those groups who are different but who really don't threaten the power of said majority. In this case, that would be gays who, in my view, want nothing more than to be treated as full-fledged citizens like the rest of us.
