Revisiting this thread in May 2013... the issue is still that
- we don't know what are the "major cities" CPS is supposedly trying to align itself with
- we don't know the length of day at those
- we don't know what major cities we will continue to compare ourselves with
- we don't know which major city has longest day, which has shortest day, and how successful are the students at those cities
- we CAN conclude no research was done, otherwise they'd happily have brandished it long ago.
So it's like Meigs Field: just bulldoze it in the middle of the night and we don't need no stinkin' studies.

I'm not the one who is so concerned about the exact particulars of the length of the school day when compared with other districts that I'm willing to spend a great deal of time looking for and through data to get the exact numbers. I know that CPS had a relatively short school day compared to other districts, both in the Chicago area and across the nation.

The longer school day was nothing more than a smoke screen to cover up the amount of time that CPS and the corporate backers of 125 Clark St. knew would be spent on additional testing and other profit extracting mis-education schemes imposed on our schools. As it is now, even pre K & kindergarten spend about 1/3 of the year on tests, and the tests do nothing to improve the kids education or their teachers understanding of any individual kid.

@ExceptGood, I respectfully submit that a thoughtful reader would understand from the article that, for all we know, the mysterious documents that show how the length of school day was calculated actually might show that the new Chicago school day length is TOO SHORT in comparison to other cities!
The gist of it is, their comparison calculations are public documents and taxpayers should be able to see them.

So, no matter which side of the fence one is on (longer day better vs shorter day better), these documents showing the actual comparisons and calculations with other cities would be a big help and would clear the air!
