I don't think anybody has to be "accredited" to play jazz, not even in an informal way. The BBNG guys went to music school, but plenty of amazing jazz players never do.

I haven't heard anybody saying "You shouldn't like BBNG because they suck, and people who like them are wrong." Anyway telling folks not to like what they like is the absolute worst habit of commenters on the Internet talking about music.

The people who take issue with BBNG are by and large taking issue with the derogatory or dismissive things these kids have said about other jazz musicians and about jazz educators--including educators at the music school the band attended.

"I for a moment don't believe that they,BBNG, are single handedly out their to change jazz but to have fun with their style of music with kids who would not likely go to a traditional sit down jazz venue. Besides what's "actual jazz"?.

I think what they were probably trying to say which has some truth to it is that most jazz is no longer dance music, it's background music for events or serious listening purists. You can be improvising within a form and still not be really breaking any new ground, much less moving people to get up and get down.

However, I'd have to agree with your take that this music is pretty stale from a jazz standpoint.
