Have not seen the film, but J.R. Jones makes a good case here of how much has been accepted about Hoover's personal life that is based on innuendo rather than fact. My only real amendment is to suggest that while we do not know whether there was any physical relationship between Hoover and Tolson, we do know that their attachment was great and that Hoover had an obsession with sexuality in general, homosexual or "deviate" behavior in particular, and a love of gossip -- substantiated and otherwise -- and of blackmail and blacklisting.

"The one possibility that could never gain any popular currency—even though it's probably the truth—is that Hoover was completely asexual. His appetite for power was so enormous that it might well have canceled out any normal human appetite for physical contact."
I don't think that's the way it works.

If J. Edgar Hoover was gay , it's another (pecularily American ) tale of closeted homosexuals being furiously anti - gay, either to cover up thier publicly unpopular behavior , or , just because of their extreme psychological instability. From Roy Cohn , the closeted anti gay lawyer with extreme right wing power, to , I don't know , Rush Limbaugh , the extreme right wing radio host , who has allegedly had liasons with young male hookers in the Caribbian.
