The writer makes a fair point about the application and without knowing any of the other films at the festival it is hard for me to draw any sort of judgement.

Bearden and the others in the group were quite contentt as Bush turned the surplus he inherited into a catastrophic deficit, flushed the economy down the toilet through edregulation, and not only pre-empted state regulation that had been the historical pattern, but openly spurned the Constitution on everything from wiretaps to habeas corpus.

When obama was inaugurated, however, they organized around opposition to deficits and support of an esoteric interprertation of the Constitution.

Are they sincere? No way!

I'm not sure that a film about poverty (as some of those clearly are) has to be set in Missouri to speak to poverty in Missouri, since to a certain extent it's possible to generalize from state to state.

Interesting as they sound, as far as I can see, the closest anything comes to being a study of poverty in western Missouri (or any other part of Missouri) is "Winter's Bone," a feature film set in the Missouri Ozarks that didn't require a film festival to bring it to the public's attention.
