The irony really is that this a-hole Hoskins who won his seat by just 116 votes, came out against stimulus funding from the Obama administration. In fact I think it would be an accurate characterization that all MO GOP publicly elected officials had a universal stance against the stimulus bill or any funds/tax payer dollars towards government subsidized jobs.

The writer makes a fair point about the application and without knowing any of the other films at the festival it is hard for me to draw any sort of judgement.

I can certainly agree that $100,000 for a film festival is an over-the-top allocation from stimulus funds - if indeed all of that money was used for the fest, alone. However, the state should not be able to pull funds, at the eleventh hour, that have already been approved.
Bearden and the others in the group were quite contentt as Bush turned the surplus he inherited into a catastrophic deficit, flushed the economy down the toilet through edregulation, and not only pre-empted state regulation that had been the historical pattern, but openly spurned the Constitution on everything from wiretaps to habeas corpus.

When obama was inaugurated, however, they organized around opposition to deficits and support of an esoteric interprertation of the Constitution.
This incident of yanking funds because a few teabaggers bully a few politicians reminds one of the Acorn scandal where both Dems and GOPS were quick to pull funding from one of the most successful organizations ever to aid the poor in the U.S. . Eventually, the investigation into Acorn proved their innocence but the mass media barely took note of that and Congress failed to re-instate Acorn's funding. That's the kind of society we have become - one that would rather bicker over culture wars created by politicians (just dare to look up Carl Bearden's sordid history of politics in Missouri) than actually discuss real issues in reasoned debates.

After reading this article, I believe that the bigger issue is that the $100,000 in federal stimulus money was taken away because it did not further the conservative agenda. That is to say, the ideas were contradictory to typical Republican thought, and being in the Bible belt, a film about homosexuality and a other interpretations did not sit well with Missouri leaders.

Thanks, Mike. I had a heck of a time finding any program info on the fest's website.

I'm not sure that a film about poverty (as some of those clearly are) has to be set in Missouri to speak to poverty in Missouri, since to a certain extent it's possible to generalize from state to state.

Good question, Philip. Here's the program's description of other films, at http://www.showmefilmfest.org/index.cfm?Pa…

Interesting as they sound, as far as I can see, the closest anything comes to being a study of poverty in western Missouri (or any other part of Missouri) is "Winter's Bone," a feature film set in the Missouri Ozarks that didn't require a film festival to bring it to the public's attention.

People may not have thought the stimulus cash should go to a film festival, but this brings up a greater concern about if our country also values art and education. I think stimulus dollars should be allocated to a wide variety of endeavors so we can keep our nation vibrant.
