Re: “Fall Out Boy bails on alt-rock

Even if I were not a fan of Fall Out Boy, many aspects of this article seem unfair to me. For one, genres of musics are made for people to have a generalization of what they like. Just because a band is labeled as "emo" or "pop-punk" it does not mean that it dictates the type of music they are allowed to make. Musicians are artists, and no one ever told Van Gogh how to paint.
Also, it's frankly ignorant to dehumanize the people that work so diligently to pursue their own music. Admittedly, a majority of today's musicians work towards commercialized crap rather than a personal sound, but there are still a few genuine artists. Fall Out Boy has been called a group a sell outs too many times to count. Yet, they still make music that they love, not because it will top the charts.
As much as I hate to admit it, Folie a Duex bombed in 2008. It was an amazing album, with Stump's incomparable vocals and Wentz's timeless lyrics, but many of their fans couldn't appreciate it because they only wanted to hear the familiar sounds of Take This to Your Grave. But, times change, and with it, Fall Out Boy.
As they got older, their music evolved along with them. All music is evolving. In fact, because, of this, society is better off with the hodge-podge of musical stylings that currently control the Hot 100. People that listen to Drake and Rick Ross should be just as open to hearing Little Big Town and The Lumineers. Music is self-expression, not a barrier between fans. Whether you're a fan of Fall Out Boy, Lil' Wayne, or Taylor Swift, we're all the same. We are fans of music, and that's all it should be.
