Re: “Llewyn Davis was a journeyman—and every industry has them

Oh yes, I, my wife and daughter, went to see American Hustle on Christmas Day. All three of us left the theater mystified about the rave reviews it got, particularly that of Richard Roeper. We thought it a mildly entertaining two and half star, three star film.

I did not like Barton Fink the first time I saw it, but some years later I revisited it and loved it. I think there is something in the nature of Coen films that produce those kinds of reactions.

Re: “The Third Coast—turning a bunch of stuff that happened into drama

Excellent review, and has made me go out and buy it.

Re: “Two French filmmakers overrated by middlebrows and underrated by cineastes

Sautet is one of my favorites, consistently top-notch,while Malle can be pretty bad at time (May Fools anyone?).

Re: “Weekly Top Five: Roman Polanski films

Ghost Writer was terribly overlooked. I remember seeing it in a mostly empty theater in teh suburbs. I thought it was outstanding, and it made it on my year's end top ten. I would put Tess in my top five, and take out the Tenant. I have not seen Cul-De-Sac, but now I must.

Re: “Weekly Top Five: Most anticipated films for 2013

The Julie Delpy-Ethan Hawke series is credited as a Linklater style, but to me it is close to an Eric Rohmer style, perfected in such films as GIrlfriends and Boyfriends and A Summer Affair.
