Dear Readers:
Chicago Reader's long Article about Walter Burnett, a representative to the City Council is welcome. He is the African-American protgee of the late G. Dunn of the 42nd Ward ---near North Side-- and J. White, a powerful older African-Ammerican civic leader who heads the office of the Illinois Secretary of State. He came out of the Cabrini Green area across the economic border from North Michigan Avenue and great wealth.........traveled the disastrous road some men with risk factors of a teenaged mother and yong working father are exposed to. Crime is rampant in the Housing and Urban Development economic and cultural ghettos created by American housing policy.
It is fine that he got a second chance,
Few of the people who naively went to a bank to steal, robbed, or used drugs got that kind of break! Perhaps he deserved it, I do not know.
HOWEVER, ALDERMAN WALTER BURNETT, JR. HAD an opportunity to do something for his own people. Instead he made a career by FUNCTIONING essentially as a patronage employee, working within the narrow guidelines of a racially charged agenda, national in scope, to remove, relocate and disembowel the folks living in what became a high rise ghettos. This replay of urban removal is A Blueprint for Disaster* That combined with discriminatory bank fiancing and employment and educational barriers is is an event causing great suffering, distress, and destruction. It is a truly a tragedy to watch him deftly move backwards and sideways when the hope was that he wanted to see better things for African Americans as well as Mexican people.
We who work in the housing and economic rights arena know that he is has Not brought a brighter day that would make both white and black and brown better..........sensed that one must steer clear of this mover and shaker who has benfited few but himself, his political appointee wife, Jesse White and the majority.^
M. Dumke could have opened the envelope with the bad news as well as day-to-day activities who does know how Chucago works. The Ald 27th Ward hard worker pol is a companion piece of the special kind machine politics that characterizes government. Like one of the commentators noted ------------ he is a symbol of what politics is in Chicago.
