This incident of yanking funds because a few teabaggers bully a few politicians reminds one of the Acorn scandal where both Dems and GOPS were quick to pull funding from one of the most successful organizations ever to aid the poor in the U.S. . Eventually, the investigation into Acorn proved their innocence but the mass media barely took note of that and Congress failed to re-instate Acorn's funding. That's the kind of society we have become - one that would rather bicker over culture wars created by politicians (just dare to look up Carl Bearden's sordid history of politics in Missouri) than actually discuss real issues in reasoned debates. Just imagine if the film fest had not been boycotted by many of the regionals but instead was widely supported. They would have experienced dialogue on a variety of social justice issues ranging all the way from poverty to the rights of homosexuals. We are all in this together and we need to be holding discussions such as the moderated panel discussion held prior to Fish Out of Water's film screening. If one had attended rather than boycotted the film fest and its events, he/she could have witnessed reasoned debate and discussion on religion and homosexuality amongst a panel of local religious leaders, educators, and audience members. People left feeling exhilarated by the various viewpoints expressed by members of the panel and audience. I live in Missouri and I'll be contacting my representatives and governor and encouraging them not to make the same mistake as those in Congress did with Acorn. Let's reinstate the funding for the social justice film fest and make it an annual event that grows both the hearts and minds of members of the Warrensburg community. Afterall, this event gave 22 jobs to unemployed individuals living in the community besides opening up much-needed dialogue on poverty and other social justice issues often neglected by politicians. Let's not let the teabaggers and right-wingers bully our rights to receive stimulus funding to aid those in need and create awareness about poverty and rights of individuals through education. Watch the youtube video mentioned above for more truthiness. Going to write Governor Jay Nixon and Missouri legislators right now so why don't you join me and feel good about doing something that creates postive change.
