The whole second rate faux Art Prize needs to be junked. Anyone serious who gets involved with anything having to do with CAC should consult a shrink immediately! In the best of worlds all top ten contestants would have told ALO and CAC to take their chump change prize and get lost. The whole thing needs to go away. Chicago is a serious place -we deserve a serious art world with serious people involved -which immediately disqualifies all of the clowns running this half baked marketing scam.
Apparently CAC has cratered and reinstated Bernard -with apology pending.
Isn't it just GREAT! watching Chicago get schooled by Grand Rapids? -nothing surprising here -read this clown bama -(obviously a non-for-profit minion involved in this laughable mess) thats the mentality running this dog and pony show. I suggest the top ten contestants ALL withdraw as a show of support for a good long time Chicago artist in the process of being slandered.
Very few of the top artists here chose to involve themselves in this Grand Rapids wannabe charade. From what I have heard, it was well known amongst the jurors that most of the stuff entered was god-awful and that it was a stretch to find even a few quality entrants. What they are doing to Bernard is disgusting. If you want to see how something like this should be run, just look to that art mecca we are trying to emulate-Grand Rapids Art Prize that is.
Bernard is a good artist -and obviously a smart guy: he should have known better than to get involved in anything having anything to do with that confederacy of no talent dunces known as the CAC.
btw -where all the big spenders from Chicago -with their multimillion dollar art collection, when it comes time to pitch in and add to the pathetic 25k pot? Oh! That's right! I almost forgot! Serious collectors in Chicago do not support Chicago art! Due to their lack of testicular fortitude, they only buy what they are told to buy, following instructions, collecting only what has been 'ordained and sanctioned' on either coast.
justanobserver makes some valid points: The Grand Rapids idea wasnt bad -it is just that the level of work there -even those who won, was not very good. At the same time -it is hilarious and indicative of what is really happening in Chicago that the best we can come up with here is a tenth as good as Grand Rapids -though its not surprising -remember, we enjoy here in Chicago approximately the same amount of international art coverage as does Boise Idaho -and at this point given the contest in Grand Rapids, its national/international coverage, lag somewhere behind Grand Rapids......and why not? The gallery scene here is moribund (-highlights: Rhona Hoffman opening with Wiley Kehinde for what, the third year in a row? With those slick slide projected knock-offs of his, not a sign of life in any of them -or those laughable 'pseudo something supposedly serious gray paintings at Tony Wights -just what we needed Gaylen Gerber Mach 2 as if more incompetent mediocrity is called for) is a ghost town -go out to the openings this year?....spare were the crowds, poor was the art.....then there are the slacker/hipster apt galleries with their dorm level art.....why should or would anyone put Chicago ahead of Grand Rapids? And finally that this whole thing has the CAC stamp on it -forget it. They always suck.
