Re: “Beginners

Thought this was an excellent film, very sensitive to the characters and the challenges they were facing. Music, script & plot seemed to flow well. 2 critiques: Goran Visnjic's character was ludicrous and detracted from the seamlessness of the film; Melanie Laurent's character rises out of a total vacuum and is never fully developed. Ewan McGregor and Christopher Plummer give graceful and warm performances - I expected nothing less from them.

Re: “Please Give

How this movie got JR Jones' glowing review is beyond me. Katherine Keener's character is a moron, and that's about how Ms. Keener plays her. Amanda Peet and Oliver Platt play flat, unlikeable characters. The only relationship worth discovering in this movie is the one between Rebecca Hall's and and Ann Guilbert's characters - sadly, this wasn't the main storyline. This is a rather rambling film that does nothing more than underscore how emotionally stunted the vast majority of people are. (And what was the whole bit about the mammograms at the beginning? I found myself feeling embarrassed and wondering if it wasn't a ploy just to get some naked women on screen.)

Re: “How to Fix the El

Wow; the CTA's response is, to say the least, pathetic. How can they be so narrowly-focused on one stretch of the Red/Purple lines?? And, yes, the Yellow Line is totally in the way at Howard - if it's blocking the way to get more trains going, why haven't they addressed this issue? Maybe it should be the YRPM project?!....
