Great, great piece, Jessica. Its great to have a review so trenchant in exploring the tiny fronts on which Vampire Weekend both succeed and fail, and how these fronts make their way into critical discourse.
One thing: Is "Cousins" another song that makes use of Autotune? Because it's very apparent on "California English," but I can't hear it on "Cousins" at all.

Also, I think that second to last paragraph is great, particularly in how disassembles the lazy descriptor of "African" or "Afropop," music journo shorthand for this Vampire Weekend aesthetic, which, as you point out, involves several other spheres of influence.
