Re: “Volo Restaurant Wine Bar

While Volo looks great, I was very disappointed by the food and found the wine a bit hit-or-miss. My friend and I both got flights, which were very reasonably priced. We ordered three small plates to share: two orders of oysters and one pizza. The heaps of vinegary apple on the oysters was just unappealing. Way too much vinegar. The pizza with goat cheese and artichoke was much better, but still seemed to be missing a little something.

Re: “Bongo Room

Although there was a bit of a wait for a table (which we expected at noon on a Saturday), it was well worth it. My boyfriend and I got one savory dish and one sweet one and swapped off. We both greatly enjoyed the decadent french toast with cherries jubilee and the chorizo, corn, and egg burrito. The bloody marys were not too spicy, with great flavor. The decor is warm and the host and waitress were friendly and helpful. I would definitely go again.

Re: “Uncommon Ground

I was surprised that there was no wait for a table at 11 am on a Saturday. The decor and atmosphere at Uncommon Ground is quite pleasant. The food was a bit hit-and-miss, however. My friend ordered one of the entrees on the list of specials, the pork breakfast burrito, and he enjoyed it. I ordered the tomato, spinach, and goat cheese quiche, which came with fresh fruit. The quiche was so salty that I had to send it back. I mean really like a salt lick. Completely inedible. The waitress didn't give me any problems about ordering another dish instead, so I ordered the granola with yogurt and fresh fruit. I was very pleased with the replacement. The fruit included a great assortment of berries and citrus and the granola is homemade. I also found my bloody mary to be too spicy--the spice seemed to overwhelm the other flavors. They didn't charge me for the quiche or the granola...so even though the food was a little inconsistent, I would definitely consider going back.

Re: “Mandarin House

A great place in Evanston to get an inexpensive lunch. The lunch prices are around $6 and include an entree, soup, and rice/noodles. They don't have a wide variety of dishes on the lunch menu but there are some tasty ones, especially the bi bim bop. There's almost never a wait for a table and the waitstaff is friendly and doesn't rush you. They are fairly accomodating to larger parties as well.

Ecce is a great place to get inexpensive sushi. The service tends to be fairly fast and pleasant. The shrimp rolls with bacon are a tasty appetizer and the sweet potato maki is very filling and a little bit out of the ordinary. My party also enjoyed the sumo maki and spider maki.
