We stopped here after the Mayfest because nothing else seemed to be open past 10 p.m. We ordered mainly vegetarian appetizers for a light dinner. The hummus tasted strongly of some sort of nut butter other than tahini (maybe cashew nut?) It was like eating peanut butter with pita bread. The baba gannoush tasted unnaturally smoky (liquid smoke flavoring?) and like they added concentrated lemon juice rather than fresh. For both dips we received one small piece of pita bread. The falafel was okay, nothing spectacular and the tzatziki came in a plastic souffle cup. Suprise, we were still hungry, so we ordered one more piece of pita bread and a lamb kebab. Our waitress mumbled something about being out of that item and asked if we'd like to try the "blechadjah." Undecipherable, but we said, hell let's be adventurous." What arrived was a lamb neck, some boiled rice (probably pre-cooked), and some nasty canned spinach that seemed like a spanikopita minus the pastry. Not fresh, not inventive. I would not recommend this place even if you're starving. The price tag was a meaty $70.00 after tip, which also included 3 glasses of a disgusting house wine. Go across the street to Garcia's for some real food.
Very tasty and creative sandwiches for meat-eaters and veggies alike. So-so value considering there's no sides offered with sandwich orders. (Though there are school-lunch-style Dorito bags for sale at the counter.) Perhaps they make up for the lack of sides with their heapin' helpin' of attitude. I guess, with a location right under the El and great food, they can get away with some 'tude.
We had the idea that an after wedding get together for food and margaritas would be great at El Barco. However, the food was way oversalted, the raw oysters came on a plate with no ice and smelled unpleasantly fishy, and we had difficulty getting the server to take the unwanted oysters back to the kitchen and off the bill. Food wan't very good and was very overpriced. Cocktails menu is great though! Too bad they don't have any worthwhile food to pair with the margaritas!
Tasty and affordable sushi. I've read reports that the fish wasn't as fresh as could be, but I've never personally had a bad experience there.
