Re: “Bistrot Margot

I was very comfortable eating by myself here, got great service and was warmly treated at the height of dinner time even though I was just having soup (tasty cheesy onion soup) and a fabulous, large salad (Salade de Poire--pear, dried cranberries, pistachios, blue cheese). For $23 (including a glass of wine and tip), I had a great, filling meal.

Re: “1492 Tapas Bar

A great alternative to the crowded, loud, too-hip-for-words tapas places. 1492 is a lovely multi-story townhouse. The decor is simple, with a lot of dark wood and light walls, and an overall feeling of comfort and welcome. The servings are large and the food is tasty, including (but not only) standard tapas like patatas alioli, chorizo, etc. We had a lovely skewered shrimp on saffron rice, roasted asparagus wrapped in proscuitto, and garlicky calamari.

Re: “Nix

Overpriced restaurant in the Millenium Knickerbocker Hotel. Big menu with items that sound interesting, but the taste is just OK and the prices too high.

Re: “Greek Islands

Tasty Greek food in a sprawling place. We sat in a little grouping of about 5 tables on a white-tiled level of our own. The appetizers (potato/garlic spread and calamari) were especially tasty. Main course portions were huge and the variety on the menu was quite large. On a Monday night, the place wasn't full. Cheap and tasty Greek (and other) wine by the glass and the bottle.

Greek Islands is a place I tend to forget about when thinking where to eat, except when I have visitors from the sticks, but it's better than that. Having been reminded, I'll go more.

Re: “Andies Restaurant

The Sunday jazz brunch is fun and low-cost: $16.95 for all you can eat, plus one mimosa or champagne or OJ. The food is more lunch-oriented than breakfast-oriented: There was one warming tray with vegetable omelette, bacon, and sausage, but the rest was an assortment of Mediterranean meat dishes, pasta, salads, and desserts. It was a huge and appealing spread, but the food tasted just okay to me: a little heavy and the flavors weren't very distinctive.

Re: “Bistrot Margot

Bistrot Margot makes for a nice evening--service is great, the room is nice, the menu is appealing, and the prices aren't outrageous. The food is fine, but my duck was just OK. The sauce seemed like pureed tomato sauce, which (for me) didn't work with the duck.
